Clears a Cool Million and Vanishes into Thin Air

Authorities believe that Matthew Cox, 35, recently surfaced in South Carolina, using the name Gary Sullivan to obtain more than $1M in mortgage loans and other funds. The modus operandi is reflective of Cox’s last two appearances – in Tampa, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia.

Apparently, Gary Sullivan bought a couple of nice homes in the northeast section of Columbia, South Carolina last year. The sellers carried the purchase financing. In early February of 2005, forged satisfaction documents as to the seller financing were recorded and Sullivan obtained multiple mortgages on each of the properties – totaling almost $900K. Loan funds went to pay off mortgages that had been recorded on the properties by sham companies.

Police detained Sullivan for questioning after he was picked up in connection with a fraud alert but he was released without being identified as Matthew Cox.

Then, once again, he vanished.
