Brent Michael Barber has been charged with mortgage fraud for the third time in less than twelve months. The new indictment includes 66 felony counts of conspiracy and fraud. Also named were Robert Dale Beckley and Roderick Neil Criss. The indictment seeks forfeiture of approximately $4M in cash and real estate. Click here to view the Indictment.
It is alleged that Barber persuaded people to purchase properties in the Kansas City, Missouri area, promising that no down payments were required, Barber would find renters and the investors would receive profits on sale of the properties. Mortgage applications were prepared for the investors that contained false representations and omissions material fact. The recent indictment alleges the scheme occurred between October 1999 and mid-2002. Companies allegedly operated by Barber included Somerset Homes & Investment Company; Brush Creek Management Co., LLC; The Beef Pit, a barbeque restaurant in Grandview, Missouri; Hawthorne Plaza Association, LLC; Kansas City Security Co., LLC, also known as KC Security; Lucas/KC, LLC; Midtown Restoration, LLC; Midtown Insurance Consultants, LLC; National Foreclosure Properties, LLC; and Pacific Bryant I, LLC.
In August 2004, Barber, Criss, Chauncey Joseph Calvert, and Avonda Lynn Nicodemus were charged 62 felony counts in connection with an alleged conspiracy to defraud a Gladstone, Missouri mortgage company using false loan applications and inflated real estate appraisals between May and December 1999.
In October, Barber and Vernon David Williams were charged with four felony counts in connection with an alleged scheme involving property flipping.
